Mythological Beasts And Spirits: Freybug

Also called the Hellhound and a Warg, the Freybug is something of a demonic canine from medieval English folklore. Perhaps the most famous Hellhound is Cerberus from Greek mythology. This is the three-headed dog who stands as the keeper to the gates of Hell. Milton even included him in his epic poem, Paradise Lost, which I recommend reading if you have the patience.

The twelfth labor of Heracles was to bring back Cerberus. Here are two selections which portray this.

On a more personal note, my oldest daughter owns a rescue dog whom she named Cerberus (Cerbie for short). Despite her large size and  ominous name, she’s actually an amiable pooch.

As a final offering for your viewing pleasure, here is the rendering of a Freybug by William O’ Connor from his Dracopedia: The Bestiary.

  1. Wonderful! You’ve reminded me of so much lore I’d forgotten . . . Thank you. (And I do believe I’ll make an effort to re-read Paradise Lost, too) At any rate, wonderful post. . . Oh, just one question strictly out of curiosity? Would you say “warg” is the more familiar term? More familiar than “freybug,” that is? I suppose “hellhound” is very familiar, but do you know that for some reason I believe I’ve always distinguished the warg from the hellhound. Oh well, enough of my prattle! LOL As always, all the best to you w/blessings!

    1. Keeping in mind that I have no formal training, I digitally darkened the drawings I have posted by using an auto enhancement feature. I am currently experimenting with ink outlines and watercolor fills (digitally converted to gray scale) to get that better contrast. I’m having mixed results so far, but I’ve come up with some illustrations I like pretty well. Some of those might appear in future posts, but not any time soon.
